Safety

Safety at Coffin Butte Landfill

At Coffin Butte Landfill, keeping our community and our workers safe is the most important thing we do. Safety is a priority throughout our operation, from the very base of our Landfill’s liner to the trucks we screen as they enter our gates. We keep all visitors safe by asking them to follow these Landfill Rules and Requirements.

How We Protect The Community

  • Protects Groundwater and Surface Water: Coffin Butte Landfill utilizes a network of 38 groundwater wells that are routinely monitored to verify groundwater conditions.

  • Monitored Continuously: Sophisticated safety equipment and trained personnel monitor all aspects of landfill operations to ensure that only permitted, nonhazardous materials are disposed of at the site.

  • Screened for Radiation: We use specialized instruments to check for radiation. If radiation is detected, the material in question is rejected.

  • Screened for Electronic Waste: Load checks take place every day to prevent and minimize e-waste disposal.

  • Exceeds Standards: Our industry is one of the most heavily regulated industries in the country. Coffin Butte Landfill meets and/or exceeds all regulatory requirements, obligations and safety standards.

  • Inspected Regularly: Coffin Butte Landfill is fully permitted and inspected annually by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality.

Safety First

Safety matters because individuals matter. Each of our 39,000 employees has a reason to be safe – a reason to get up every morning and do their job. It may be family, or it may be friends, but it’s why they do the job they do. Safety is our top priority and a core value at Republic Services. And it’s tied to another of our core values, to be human-centered. Our goal is zero fatalities. Period. We want every team member to go home to their family every day, regardless of their role in the company.
